Vista’s trips and activities are a great way for children and young people to develop their confidence and independence, as well as having some fun.

Joe, 19, has been supported by Vista since he was a child. Sharon, Joe’s Mum, said “When Joe was around 11 months old, he was diagnosed with Nystagmus and Ocular Albinism, and was given his first pair of glasses.”

Vista invited the family to attend networking workshops, so they could meet other families in similar situations. Sharon said “We met some really wonderful people who gave us lots of advice and encouragement.”

A few years ago, the family began to attend the charity’s activities, which have provided Joe with countless memorable experiences. Sharon said “It’s great to watch my son take part in activities that he would never have tried without the support and encouragement from Vista’s staff.”

“Joe’s condition makes judging depths very difficult, so being around water used to make him nervous. However, he’s now a confident swimmer and has been on trips to the UK Sailing Association with the charity.”

Joe’s increased confidence has had an incredible effect on his sports performance. Sharon said “He’s always been very active, and would take on any opportunities with Vista to try out new sports.”

“Over the last five years, Joe has competed in many tandem cycling events; winning 6 gold medals in the UK School Games at the Olympic Stadium in London, as well as the National Champion in the British Cycling Paracycling Road Circuit Championships.”

Sharon added “He has become a self-assured and confident young man, thanks to the support from Vista. In addition, the special memories we have made as a family are simply unforgettable.”
