Mohammed, 17, has been supported by Vista since being registered as partially sighted in 2015.

Maimuna, Mohammed’s mum, said “When he was 14, my son was diagnosed with a rare medical condition that affects his sight. He sometimes loses his vision, and these bouts can last anywhere between a minute to an entire day.”

After seeking advice at the hospital, Mohammed was referred to Vista. Paula, Vista’s Family Support Officer, contacted the family and provided information on the support and services available from the charity.

Mohammed has since taken part in a wide range of Vista’s activities for children and young people; including youth clubs, a driving experience, a residential holiday, and even performing within a group at a diverse music and dance concert. These activities have had an incredible effect on Mohammed’s confidence and independence.

Maimuna said “Before he met other children and young people who are in a similar situation, Mohammed struggled to make new friends – his lack of a social life made him feel isolated.”

“The activities are excellent, and have given Mohammed a huge boost of confidence. Working with Vista has encouraged him to socialise with new people, as well as being taught new skills. He’s now looking forward to the future.”

Maimuna added “As a parent, I feel comfortable knowing that Mohammed is in safe hands. Vista always go the extra mile, ensuring that my son’s needs are met. Vista has made Mohammed feel that he is capable of achieving anything.”
