Vista provides a variety of services for children with sight loss, as well as offering advice, guidance and emotional support to the whole family.

Rachael, Oscar’s Mum, was first made aware of Vista when her sister’s son was registered as visually impaired.

She said “When my sister, Hannah, had her son, Freddy, we noticed at around 3 months that his eyes were wobbling. He was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary and diagnosed with the genetic condition Nystagmus.”

“When Oscar was born a few weeks later, we knew what to look out for and recognised the symptoms. He was diagnosed with Nystagmus at 7 weeks old.”

As a close family, Rachael went through the emotions with her sister when Freddy was diagnosed. She said “When Oscar was diagnosed afterwards, I went through the same emotional process. I was upset, however I felt prepared and knew that Vista would be there to support us.”

Her nephew, Freddy was already registered with Vista’s children’s services, and so Hannah encouraged Rachael to take part in Stay and Play sessions.

Rachael said “I was apprehensive at first, so we attended the sessions as a family. It was really good to network with parents in similar situations – I felt encouraged to come along to even more activities.”

The pair have since attended various events, including sensory activities and a boat trip. Vista’s support has had a significantly positive impact on the family. Rachael said “Oscar used to be overwhelmed by new environments, however Vista’s activities have really helped him come out of his shell.”

She added “As a family, we feel reassured that we are providing the best support for Oscar and Freddy. If we ever need advice, Vista’s Family Support Officers, Paula and Anne are always there to have a chat.”

“We feel really lucky to have Vista on our doorstep – the charity’s excellent services have enabled us to make the best out of our situation.”
